When studying symphonic music, you cannot fully understand its mechanisms by just listening to some good stuff. Very often, instruments are covered by others, and their symbiosis makes what I call the 3D effect. This effect creates depth in the sound, which can only be perceived and not clearly heard.
On big tuttis in FF, the loud instruments (brass and percussion) dominate the sound and lessen the strings. Additionally, they all put the woodwind section in a subdued position which is no less than crucial to a good sound.
Even though the woods cannot be heard in the foreground, they provide depth and extra power to the orchestration.
In the third part of episode one, I show the hidden power of the woodwind section on big tuttis.
